McCoyd's (1967) geometrically-optic negative polarization model is generalized for the 3D case, which renders the model realistic. The calculations show the inapplicability of the model for describing the negative polarization of light scattered by atmosphereless celestial bodies. The mechanism accurately describes the degree of polarization as a function of several parameters which characterize the geometry of illumination and observation. The results of the calculations are confirmed by laboratory measurements of a glass plate with rough sides.
