To study galaxy groups as a distinct population requires well-defined samples. Only then can selection biases in existing heterogeneous samples be quantified, either to confirm or revise our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxy groups. Therefore, we propose a systematic study of 15 nearby galaxy groups representing a complete, X-ray flux-limited sample, all of which have been observed by Chandra. While the Chandra data are crucial to study the group cores, XMM is essential to reach a large fraction (0.3-0.5) of the virial radius. The implications for group formation and evolution will be assessed with numerical simulations.
