Long baseline laser interferometer gravitational wave detectors are being constructed in the United States and Europe and plans are being made for additional detectors in Japan and Australia. Initial data runs at a strain sensitivity and in a frequency band to intersect plausible astrophysical sources will begin in 2001. The talk will include: an introduction to the basic physics of gravitational waves, the detection concepts, the noise sources that limit the sensitivity, estimates for astrophysical sources, a description of the current state of the LIGO project and, finally, a brief presentation concerning the LIGO Scientific Collaboration.
