The characteristics of the external geomagnetic field are reviewed with reference to their influence on surveys of the crustal (anomalous) geomagnetic field. The geomagnetic environment of the earth is discussed in detail, with attention given to its predominantly dipole configuration, the spherical harmonic representation of field potential, and the magnetospheric magnetopause, plasma sheet and ring currents and ionospheric currents which give rise to the magnetic variations termed external field variations. The source structures, observed signals and secondary signal modifications of the individual external fields, the quiet (or steady state) and disturbed magnetic variations, are then examined. Consideration is also given to the planetary magnetic activity indices K and A, the auroral electrojet and ring current indices Ae and Dst, and indices of historical importance (Q, R, C, U, W). The problem of correcting for the external field in magnetic surveys is then addressed, and a procedure is suggested.
