Topographic contours over the meniscus of a free mercury pool were obtained by the shadow moiré method. The fringe pattern consisted of concentric circles which move to off-centre position if the container deviated from horizontality. This simple phenomenon forms the basis of a sensitive level descibed here. The detection limit of such a level was found to be of the order of 10-5 rad. Nevertheless, the essential approach is similar to that of Livnat et al. where they are formed similar fringes over a float in their moiré level. The advantage of a free mercury meniscus over a float is discussed. It is found to be about one order more sensitive besides being more practical.
