The X-ray multimirror (XMM) system, designed by the European Space Agency to perform spectroscopy of cosmic X-ray sources in an energy range from 0.1 keV to 10 keV, is described. It consists of three identical mirror modules of Wolter I type, each containing 58 individual mirrors made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and covered by a thin reflecting Au- or Ir-layer. The mirror shell was optically tested and aligned by means of a scanning laser beam test setup and an on-line evaluation method which determined the focal position and the image quality. The image quality was 88.7 arcsec initially and 30.9 after the final adjustment. The adjustment was done by means of 12 actuators acting radially on roundness errors. The image quality, obtained by means of the adjustment process, is reported to correspond fairly well with the one obtained by means of the mirror shell kept round artificially.
