Stabilizing and destabilizing aspects of loss of mass by luminous stars, information on mass loss obtainable from luminosity, expanding circumstellar shells, and evolution of stars to red giants or to supernovae are discussed. The importance of P Cygni profiles in determining mass loss rate is pointed out, and ranges of stellar mass and of mass loss likely to lead to a supernova explosion are indicated.
