Scientific paper

Since the first images of Jupiter's satellite Europa from the Voyager spacecraft, scientists have suspected that its cracked ice crust overlies a deep water ocean. Various press releases during the Galileo Orbiter mission have supported this view, and indeed the 2-year extension of the Galileo mission (1998 and 1999) is dedicated to investigating it. Now, scientists have published a detailed analysis of the evidence from the first six Galileo orbits in Nature (1998 January 22), and a fine new image from the E11 orbit reinforces the conclusions (Cover picture).
