We present a study of the spatial and temporal morphology of the auroral current system and its coupling to the magnetosphere during substorms using three independent approaches. From the observables we have deduced a time dependent model of the large-scale auroral electrojet system. Our model shows a westward electrojet system consisting of two quasi independent components located pre- and post-midnight at different latitudes. Emphasis will be put on the observational constrains provided by a large number of ground based magnetometers and global auroral images.
