Several nearby star formation regions have been surveyed in two ISOCAM bands centred at 6.7 and 14.3 μm and stars with circumstellar emission are effectively separated from reddened background stars. With reference to previous work, ISOCAM allows us to roughly double the number of know young stellar objects (YSOs) in each mapped region. Most of these new YSOs are faint and we discuss the implication as regards the initial mass function (IMF) for one of the regions, the Chamaeleon I cloud. We find that the IMF rises slowly (logarithmic index = -0.2) towards sub-stellar masses. Test cases confirm that this ISOCAM survey reveals many brown dwarfs in the closest star formation regions.
