Orbital Evolution: Artificial Satellites

Scientific paper

Results are given for an analysis of the evolution of artificial Earth satellite orbits with semimajor axes of ≡184,000 km and eccentricities of ≡0.1. A numerical analysis method based on averaging equations with respect to fast variables with allowance for the resonance nature of a satellite's motion is described. The dependence of the elements of a number of orbits on time and estimates of the changes of the eccentricity and inclination over a five year interval have been obtained. The numerical analysis calculations give quantitative results which agree satisfactorily with the results of the numerical integration of the rigorous equations of artificial Earth satellite motion.
