The distance separating a planet or regular satellite from the central body is related to the mass of the planet or satellite, and the boundary between two adjacent regions of the planet or satellite is related to the mass ratio of that planet or satellite and the central attracting body. The width of the planetary region is almost proportional to the size of the gravitational region when the boundary is judiciously selected. This argues strongly that planets (solid cores in the case of Jupiter and Saturn) and regular satellites are formed by accumulation of planetesimals, and argues against a stage of enormous proto-planets and proto-satellites.
