Improved photoelectric astrolabes were built in the 1972-1974 period. The time of almucantar transit of a star can be determined free of personal error with this astrolabe system which incorporates: a fused quartz mirror system and mercury level, a vacuum Ritchey-Chretien telescope (aperture 20 cm, focal length 2.4 m) with fixed glass grid, a time recorder, and three photomultipliers each provided with an ac amplifier. The vacuum telescope tube with horizontal entrance window makes it possible to eliminate refraction, dependence of refraction on the spectral class of the star, and irregular refraction in the tube. The astrolabe is equipped with high and low speed motors, and an automatic tracking mechanism in azimuth.
