Palaeomagnetic studies show that the geomagnetic field appears to have remained dipolar during seven polarity reversals ranging in age from 2 × 104 to 2 × 107 yr. This result is discussed in terms of a model field consisting of three dipoles, a model which is based on a recent analysis of the observed field. If we suppose that these dipoles have reversed their polarity at different times, we can interpret a number of more complex reversal paths recorded palaeomagnetically. We think that this model gives a better physical insight into the fluid motions of the Earth's core than the geocentric multipole model resulting from spherical harmonic analysis and suggest that the main geomagnetic field may be generated by about three different dynamos whose respective magnetic fields may reverse independently.
