A novel infrared detection system is presented. A responsivity of 35 fringes/W and a time constant of approximately 220 millisec were measured at room temperature for this fiber-optic interferometric thermal detector (ITD). These measurements compare well with predictions based on a thermal model of the sensor. Except for microphonics, the device was noiseless to the limit of measurement; a room temperature responsivity of about 70 million centimeter-root Hz/W is predicted by the model. Finally, the performance of alternative ITD designs is discussed.
