This study presents a method designed to improve the concept of the equivalent displacement height (EDH), the normalized variance of an atmospheric tracer. When the tracer's altitudinal profile exhibits a strong curvature or possesses a vanishing slope, the EDH of earlier definitions was governed by the normalization factor, namely the slope, rather than by the tracer's variance. The introduction of the profile's curvature into the definition of the equivalent displacement height overcomes the former difficulties and allows more accurate transport parameters to be derived from the EDH. The main advantage of the quantity 'equivalent displacement height' is the fact that with it the variances of all stratospheric tracers become comparable. The causes of these variances can be investigated simultaneously and common pattern and parameters, such as the true vertical and horizontal displacements, can be deduced.
