Ion sources used for electric propulsion (EP) are photon sources of high luminosity offering the application of optical techniques for diagnostic purposes. The classical emission spectroscopy is experimentally straight forward to establish. The general set-up consists of a monochromator-detector combination and a coupling device between the image of the source and the entrance slit of the spectrometer (Fig. 1). The system has to be specified with respect to the accessible wavelength range, quantum efficiency, noise level, the imaging quality.
