A laboratory phase-conjugated adaptive system is described in which direct measurements of the phase disturbance of a wavefront propagating from an object under study provides the necessary information for the phase correction of the transmitted wavefront. The experimental system consists of a laser transmitter, a receiving-transmitting telescope system, a system of controlled mirrors, a wavefront phase distortion transducer, and an adaptation quality control system. The operation and the principal performance characteristics of the system are discussed.
