This paper describes an experiment involving the use of a close pair of spectral lines formed at different heights in the solar atmosphere to record the vertical gradient in line-of-sight velocity oscillations. Presented are the results of first observations in an undisturbed atmosphere and in a sunspot penumbra made on 14 July 2000. Almost complete suppression of the spectrograph noise makes the method presented a useful tool for high-sensitivity measurements of small vertical gradients.
