The error is estimated for a procedure in which the horizontal vector
components of the geomagnetic field strength are expressed in terms of
vertical components. It is shown that when the procedure is used to
calculate normal fields the error does not exceed 40 gammas. Certain
aspects of the mathematical analysis are discussed.
