Interplanetary Magnetic Field: Earth Magnetosphere
Scientific paper
The penetration of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) into the magnetosphere due to the development of a trough instability of a thin layer of heated plasma near the magnetopause is described. Breakdown of the layer leads to the fact that magnetic field diffusion related to dissipation occurs on a scale of the order of the Larmor radius of the particles. This scale is determined by the sizes of the individual filaments formed in the nonlinear stage of development of the instability. The time of penetration of the IMF into the magnetosphere is specified by the "mixing" time of filaments of the heated plasma ≍ 2R/VA ≍ 0.5 h for the terrestrial magnetosphere.
