The Soviet mission to Mars that is planned for the 1994 launch window (Mars-94) consists of a Mars orbiter and a whole series of descent elements: a balloon, small stations, penetrators, and even a small Mars rover. The landings of these elements, the balloon flight, and the evolution of the orbiter's orbit depend on the characteristics of the atmosphere. The paper presented is a summary of the data on these characteristics which takes into account the characteristics of the Mars-94 project. The balloon is most sensitive to them; therefore, the most attention is paid to the layer of the atmosphere below 10 km. Both data from the published literature and also results from additional research carried out especially for the Mars-94 project are used. The MA-90 model has been recommended by the Space Research Institute of The Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR as the initial data for the Mars-94 project.
