Observations for two sunspots of lines formed in the temperature range from 2 x 10 to the 4th K (C II) to 1.4 x 10 to the 6th K (Fe XII) taken with the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) onboard the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) spacecraft are presented. Results show that the sunspots are regions of lower intensity than the surrounding plage, and they have line intensities which vary little over a period of several hours. The derived upper limit to mass flows of 2 km/sec indicates a relatively simple energy balance for the chromosphere-corona transition zone with thermal conduction being balanced by radiative losses. The electron densities derived from N IV to C IV line ratios indicate electron pressures (logNeTe) of 15.0-15.3.
