The Electron Diffusion Region (EDR) has been diagnostically identified using order of magnitude improved time resolution parameters from the Hydra hot plasma instrument on Polar. Signatures that have been used for this identification are (i) the super ion Alfven speed electron flows that are also a significant fraction of the electron thermal speed, nestled between (ii) two traversals of significantly enhanced electron agyrotropy, all (iii) within a current layer that demonstrably has the scale of the electron gyroradius. This example on Feb 18, 2002 is an example of the common situation on Polar where the magnetopause is principally encountered at apogee, when the magnetopause is near its turning point, since this position is well inside the typical equilibrium position of the magnetopause. The inferred world-line of the spacecraft makes a "U" turn within the current channel, entering from the magnetosphere, giving a double pass through the current channel. The enhanced electron agyrotropy (from the pressure tensor) confirms that the electrons are demagnetized. The size of the magnetization guiding center parameter independently confirms the thermal electrons are demagnetized. The transit time profiles are favorably compared with an asymmetric 2D PIC simulation down to the details of phasing of transits of enhanced flows that would qualify as the edge of the inner of the two scales of the EDR, but not a passage through the separator.
