Planetary Atmospheres: Optical Thickness

Scientific paper

A semi-infinite atmosphere illuminated by parallel rays is considered. An equation is proposed to determine the effective optical thickness τ0e of a layer where the observed spectrum is formed. The left side of this equation is a ratio of the number of photons having been below τ0e level to the whole number of photons reflected by the medium in the direction of an observer. The right side of the equation is the relative error of observations ɛ.
