The paper is a brief review of the most important contradiction between scaling predictions and cosmic-ray EAS data, among which a new difficulty concerning the absorption length at sea level is noted. The possibility of reestablishment of an interaction model developed according to the Feynman hypothesis for accelerator data is analyzed for two favorable circumstances able to reduce disagreement: (1) reduction of the electron-radiation length in air, and (2) hypothesis of a rising-energy pion-nucleus cross section.
