A description is presented of the image processing facilities available at the University Observatory, St. Andrews. These facilities are implemented on an entirely self-contained system based on two minicomputers. All the routines are written in FORTH, a versatile, highly modular language well suited to interactive data reduction in a minicomputer. Facilities available include graphical display of one and two-dimensional data, the interactive removal of spurious objects, Fourier techniques to filter high frequency noise and reduce the effects of instrumental broadening. Fourier techniques are also employed to determine stellar radial velocities by the cross-correlation of spectrograms. Finally a technique for scanning UK 48-inch Schmidt objective prism plates is described in which the spectra are automatically located and scanned, thus rendering unnecessary any measurements of the surrounding sky.
