The potential anticorrelation between strengths of internal and transient external fields in the auroral regions is analyzed. The auroral activity is studied using K indices recorded from 1959-1978 in eight longitudinal sectors corresponding to groups of two to three subauroral or midlatitude observatories in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The mean activity values are calculated; it is observed that the larger the intensity of main field at auroral latitudes the smaller the amplitude of activity. The possible anticorrelation between variations in internal field intensity close to the dip equator and SSC amplitude recorded at five low-latitude observatories is examined.
