The propagation of longitudinal and transverse simple waves in thin magnetic flux tubes is studied by purely analytical means. All the characteristic speeds are found and all the Riemann invariants are obtained. For longitudinal simple waves, the magnetic field decreases and the wave propagation speed increases if the wave is a compression wave. In this case the wave profile steepens and the wave tends to a shock. For transverse simple waves, the wave propagation speed is constant and the shape of the wave is shifted without distortion.
