Spherical Langmuir probe characteristics in a collisionless plasma are analyzed based on the theory of Bohm et al. (1949). This analysis is valid in the region in which the ratio of the probe radius to the Debye radius of the plasma is smaller than that in Lam's (1965) modified theory, and takes into consideration the 'distribution' of ion energy. Experiments to measure the plasma density and the floating potential in a mercury diffusion plasma are carried out, and good agreement between theoretical and experimental values of the floating potential is obtained.
