The solar flare of July 14, 1980, is characterized on the basis of H-alpha observations obtained at Yunnan Observatory and X-ray data from the SMM satellite. The data are presented in graphs, maps, tables, and diagrams. It is found that the hard and soft X-ray bursts are produced by high-energy thermal electrons accelerated in the current sheet and by bremsstrahlung (of high-temperature sheet plasma and of nonthermal electrons), respectively. The relative positions of the H-alpha and X-ray events are shown to be consistent with the emerging-magnetic-flux theory of flare processes.
