We are developing an Adaptively Refined Magnetohydrodynamic Solver to address physical problems arising in solar and space physics and astrophysics that involve the dynamics of magnetized fluids. In many such applications, critical processes occur in relatively small regions of space that are strongly time-varying in the location and duration of the dynamically important events. Examples include the MHD shock waves launched from eruptive flares and the current sheets formed when magnetic fields threading highly conducting plasmas are stressed. Efficiently solving these problems numerically requires that the grid dynamically adapt to the solution. Our approach combines NRL's flux-corrected transport (FCT) algorithms for multidimensional MHD with NASA's parallel adaptive mesh refinement toolkit, PARAMESH. The objective is a robust tool for time-dependent, nonlinear, three-dimensional MHD simulations on an adaptive, block-structured grid. Some initial results from our new model will be presented.
