This paper discusses the design of a radio spectrograph whose primary function is to diffract light into an order whose light intensity distribution is accurately related to the power spectrum of a radio signal. The transition is accomplished by the interaction of the incoming beam with an acoustic wave. A quartz crystal modulator provides up to 800 resolution intervals across the entire bandwidth. Also discussed are the noise efficiency parameters of the system.
