It is suggested that Cerenkov radiation produced in the synchrotron mode by ejection of relativistic or ultrarelativistic electrons is amplified and may account for the observed optical luminosity of quasars. Specifically, it is proposed that the wave emitted by a relativistic particle in the Cerenkov mode might experience amplification by the Landau mechanism, and this process is analyzed for typical quasar parameters. The results show that the amplification factor could be as high as 1000 in an amplification region with a characteristic dimension of 10,000 km.
