Cyclotron self-absorption in the accretion columns of AM Her-type binaries is discussed. The maximum frequency for which the column is opaque is calculated for parameters appropriate to such systems. In AM Her, cyclotron self-absorption can explain the coincidence of the primary optical minimum and the standstill in the fractional circular polarization with the X-ray maximum.
