THE rotational Raman bands excited by the λ2536 mercury line in nitrogen and hydrogen show the alternating intensities characteristic of a symmetrical molecule with a nuclear spin. In my communications on the subject (NATURE, May 18, 1929; Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci., 15, 515; 1929) 1 reported the lines corresponding to transitions between even numbered rotational levels to be the strong ones in N2, while the opposite is true for H2.
