The papers report recent progress in the study of the nuclear-physics and space-physics aspects of cosmic radiation, present results of experimental observations of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays, and describe instruments and techniques developed for experimental investigations of cosmic-ray particles. Topics include the properties of cascade showers formed by muons in iron, the 'normalized multiplicity' of particles produced in hadron-nucleus interactions, the effective cross section for inelastic collisions between high-energy protons and atomic nuclei, the composition and properties of cosmic rays observed from mountain tops, interactions of relativistic cosmic-ray nuclei with target nuclei, and cascade development in different media. Other papers deal with a technique for studying muon spatial and energy distributions in extensive air showers, the energy spectrum of high-energy cosmic rays, the longitudinal development and anisotropy of ultrahigh-energy extensive air showers, the production of high-energy muons in the atmosphere, the cosmic-ray muon background in different solar-neutrino detectors, and an acoustic effect from high-energy particles in certain stable fluids. Individual items are announced in this issue.
