A modulating-function method is used to construct a multistep descent guidance algorithm for precision landing of a spacecraft on the Martian surface. The method involves calculation of the phase coordinates of the center of mass of the spacecraft on the basis of a fundamental system of variational navigation equations, describing the descent process. Numerical modeling indicates that the proposed method assures high accuracy of landing within a descent corridor of approximately 100 km.
