A new physical mechanism was proposed by Hollweg (1974) for the acceleration of alpha particles in the solar wind, consisting of the interaction of the particles with Alfven waves. This paper uses a simple three-fluid solar wind model consisting of electrons, protons and alpha particles to numerically evaluate this mechanism. It is shown that the preferential acceleration of alpha particles by Alfven waves equalizes alpha and proton flow velocities at 1 AU. However, there are two problems: the model does not find the alpha velocity to exceed the proton velocity at 1 AU and calculations give values of the alpha velocity which are unreasonably low near the sun. These results indicate that this mechanism is probably not the sole mechanism for alpha particle acceleration in the solar wind.
