The paper presents a theory for the generation of Alfven solitons
propagating along the external magnetic field in a nonequilibrium
plasma. It is shown that the amplitude and width of a steady soliton are
determined by the parameters of the unperturbed medium. The application
of the theory to geomagnetic pulsations of type Pc1 is discussed.
