THE age of the pulsar PSR 0833-45 determined from its period and the rate of increase of this period dT/dt is1 PSR 0833-45 has been identified with the radio nebula Vela X. This nebula is a typical remnant of a type II supernova, like the Cygnus Loop and IC 443, for instance. The radio and optical properties of this nebula were described by Milne2. From the observed characteristics of Vela X we can calculate the age of the nebula. According to my theory the age of the radio remnants of a type II supernova is3 where Iv is the mean surface brightness of the nebula at a given frequency and ρ1 is the undisturbed density of the interstellar medium surrounding the nebula. According to current data2,3 we can write where tcyg is the age of the Cygnus Loop, an object which is very similar to Vela X. From observations at 21 cm, measurements of the interstellar dispersion of PSR 0833-45 and observations of the ultraviolet spectrum of γ Velorum, it follows that the density of the interstellar matter around Vela X, ρvela, is high and at least of the same order of magnitude as that around the Cygnus Loop. Therefore I conclude that The age of the Cygnus Loop according to different estimates lies between 60,000 and 100,000 yr (ref. 3). I conclude therefore that the age of Vela X is in the range 30,000-50,000 yr, which is definitely several times larger than the age of pulsar PSR 0833-45 which is nevertheless evidently connected genetically with this nebula. The direct proof for this conclusion would be the observation of the proper motion and radial velocity of the ``optical'' filaments of Vela X. Such observations are very desirable.
