I briefly review what is known about AGB variables in the Galaxy and the Local Group, with particular emphasis on the large amplitude or Mira variables. The period-luminosity relation for Miras is described and its calibration from LMC and Galactic observations is discussed. Carbon-rich Miras exhibit obscuration events, due to erratic mass-loss, which complicate their use as distance indicators. Nevertheless, extended studies of these stars within the Local Group are providing useful insight on star formation histories as well as on the variables themselves.
