We present the results of our spectropolarimetric observations of the X-ray binary Cyg X-1 with FORS1 at the VLT 8.2-m telescope (Paranal, Chile) in 2007-2008. This is the first successful attempt of registering magnetic field in a binary system with a black hole.
Measurements based on Zeeman effect were conducted using the total of the supergiant photosphere spectrum absorption lines within λλ 3680-5129Å. A new method adopted to objects with strong interstellar polarization was developed and used by us (Karitskaya et al. 2009). The mean longitudinal field over the disc of the optical star (the O9.7 Iab supergiant) varies regularly with the orbital phase (two waves for period) reaching 130 G (σ = 20 G) at phase 0.5.
The obtained results probably point to variations of magnetic field structure during a year. Similar measurements using the HeII λ 4686Å emission line yielded the field strength of ˜ 600 G at about 4 σ significance level. The Doppler tomogram of the system based on the HeII λ 4686Å line VLT profiles shows that the line emission component originates in the outer regions of the accretion structure. According to the standard model of the disc accretion, such numbers correspond to the near-black-hole magnetic field value of ˜ 10^8 - 10^9 G and can explain the X-ray millisecond flickering of Cyg X-1.
