There are two kinds of particles in the atmosphere of Titan: a photochemical aerosol formed at high altitude (about 400 km) through dissociation of hydrocarbons by solar photons and charged particles of the Saturn magnetosphere slowly precipitating through the stratosphere, and particles of condensed hydrocarbons and nitriles in the lower stratosphere, below 80 km (with perhaps methane clouds between 10 and 40 km). In view of the future Cassini Mission, which includes the Huygens descent probe in the atmosphere of Titan, the more appropriate methods for a direct investigation of the chemical properties of the particles are examined. Results of a preliminary design study of a potential instrument proposed for the probe are given.
