Aitken nuclei concentrations were measured in air samples taken over the Greenland ice cap and 2 km offshore near Barrow, AK to quantify the formation of aerosols following air-washing meteorological events. It is noted that aerosol levels approach zero in the Arctic and Antarctic, after fogs, and even above ground vegetation, until sunlight warming and vertical mixing allow reactions to generate new aerosols. Size measurements revealed that recovery from zero aerosol concentrations takes place in situ. It is suggested that long-period, fine resolution monitoring of aerosols in the lower troposphere could provide definitive information on aerosol formation.
