Physical conditions in the atmospheres of planets depends to a significant degree on the presence of aerosol particles which manifest themselves significantly in the general thermal balance of the Jovian and Saturn atmospheres. The cloud covers of these planets reflect and backscatter into space nearly half of the radiant energy of the Sun that reaches the planets. The chemical composition of the atmospheres and of the cloud layers are discussed.
