Spectral irradiances obtained over a period of 10 years at wavelengths relevant to the photodissociation of molecular oxygen are evaluated. It is found that the observational results are not reliable in the spectral region of wavelengths corresponding to the O2 Schumann-Runge continuum which is absorbed in the thermosphere. In the second part, recently determined solar irradiances, absorption cross-sections, molecular scattering cross-sections, and O3 absorption cross-sections are used to determine the photodissociation of molecular oxygen in the spectral region of the Herzberg continuum.
