The problem of the dynamical behavior of charged particles in two-dimensional magnetic field reversals was analyzed. Discrete mappings instead of the original differential equations of motion, were used to determine the border of regularity and the transition to deterministic chaos, to provide a comprehensive investigation also of the nonadiabatic case, where the magnetic moment is not adiabatically constant. The nonlinear particle dynamics is shown to be controlled by a parameter which includes the peculiarity of the field geometry in the reversal region and the particle's energy (i.e., its total velocity).
