The problem of the substitution of a distribution of sources with polynomial volumne density by an adequate surface source distribution is examined with reference to an ellipsoidal region. The latter distribution (described by an unknown surface density) must generate the same external potential as the former one. The method of multipole moments is shown to yield a solution to the problenm with the preservation of its symmetry and without the use of Lame functions.
