An investigation of the nuclear stability of heavy neutron-rich nuclei, on the basis of more recent model refinements and the microscopic-macroscopic method, gives additional support to an earlier suggestion regarding the unlikelihood of the synthesis of superheavy elements by the r-process. The use of microscopically calculated inertial masses gives some probability for a moderate longevity around Z = 110, N = 172.
